Dear ICU Staff Nurses,
Just because I am not allowed to carry heavy things nor turn patients every 2 hours, doesn't mean I am not qualified as an ICU nurse. I know that part of the routine care is turning the patient but I don't think I cannot do the other nursing interventions.
In case you do not know yet, I've always wanted to work in an intensive care unit or a coronary care unit. I want challenges. I want practicing my critical thinking skills. If you think that my capacity is only in the wards, I respect that. But I just want you to know that I am the type of nurse who likes to be busy/toxic than to be bored. Yes, I hate the routine care but I believe that working in the ICU exposes me to different situations that I should learn for future use.
I really hope that my limitations because of my health wouldn't affect my performance evaluation. Please don't be too biased.
Love,
your trainee

dear trainee,
ReplyDeletefor 3 years as a staff icu nurse, i should say that routine care only a part of what we do. but neverthless its the most important. WE are NURSES, not doctors who just rely on medication, we do those things such as turning pt side to side, bedsore precs, tsb, tepid sponge baths because we are NURSES. giving medications is an independent job.n
if, in your case, you have a health problem regarding liftings, well then, as a nurse, limit yourself not because you want it but because your body needs it. or find an institution who have their own lifters or assistant, or where icu nurses need not lift patients.
there things in life that are limited, be good to your body,,,
I know that. I know lifting is part of our nursing care and I don't need to find an institution where nurses don't life patients (Is there one?). I just want these ICU nurses to be sensitive of our (or my) feelings just because I am a mere trainee. Thank you.
